Living without a car when you live in a suburban or rural area is miserable.

Hello chambers friends. I’m a woman who commutes to work 45 minutes each way and I thought I finally figured out the secret to getting out of my dead-end job and busier myself, which is getting a new job closer to home. My issue is that they don’t hire sales associates, and when they do, it’s for when the store closes. I have friends that work there, and they all start at 4 and end at 10, which doesn’t work for me as I am a morning person. I know when the opportunity comes to me, I’m gonna take it, but until then when I’m ready to end the night, I am gonna end the night. Looks like I’m getting home an hour late again, as I am on my way home and haven’t eaten dinner yet. We all know what a change like this means….. Uber eats. I’m not gonna take the bus home. I have to walk 40 minutes and that’s a complete waste of time. I’m not gonna walk home either. That’s a complete waste of time too, and it’s dark out.

There’s so many jobs within walking distance, so I could just apply to any fast food place and get the job, and live in a world where I walk to work. Sounds easy enough. Sounds like a dream, actually. Here’s the issue….. I’m home before 3 most days, so I have time to enjoy the rest of the day. No thanks. I’m not gonna go home and sit inside all day. I’ll go out and enjoy myself. That means I have to drive. Grocery shopping, once or twice a week. There’s no grocery store within walking distance. I’m gonna have to drive. Also no thanks to public transportation. Same issue again, I’m gonna have to walk for over an hour and a half and I’m not gonna sit on a bus for that long to get home when the sun is setting. I’ll drive. I’m gonna visit my cousins in the city this weekend and I’m gonna drive.

There’s a bus I can take home from work, but I have to catch it right when I’m done with my shift or I’m gonna miss my bus and it’s a very inconvenient time to catch, as I have to catch it between 4:30-5, and the latest I would be done with work is 4:30. If I catch the bus at 5, I’m gonna have to wait an hour at work for the next one, and at this time the bus is going in the opposite direction than I am so I’m gonna be on it for an hour. No thanks. I’m not gonna do all this for the sake of not owning a car. There’s also no bus to catch on my days off because the latest they run is 6pm so I’m gonna have to drive a rented car or an Uber anyways.

I just feel miserable when I have to use public transport. It takes so much time and you have to plan your day around it. I’m not gonna rent a car and drive for an hour to visit my cousins this weekend. I’m gonna Uber. I’m not gonna take a bus for an hour and a half and walk an hour home, and call an Uber for me to sit in traffic for over an hour for a 45 minute drive. It just doesn’t make sense, and it’s something we all know. The car industry knows, the automotive industry knows, the oil industry knows, the government knows, the media knows…. everyone knows that cars are an essential part of life for most of us. There’s been a huge push on public transportation in the last decade or so, but it just doesn’t get used that much as it’s so inconvenient. I took the bus home from work the other day and the bus driver said she was the only one on that route. I’m just sick of public transportation.

I feel like I’m ranting at this point, and I am, but I just see all these people on here saying living without a car doesn’t affect your day to day life. It absolutely affects your life to not have a car. You’re gonna have to spend so much time and money taking public transportation, renting cars, calling an Uber, or sitting in traffic that you might as well have a car. But hey, when you live in a big city, it’s not that big of a deal to not have a car. I get that. You can walk or take a bus or train or call an Uber or something and not have to worry about it. I get that. But in suburban or rural areas, a car is a necessity, and anyone that says otherwise is just talking out of their neck.

Edit: I just want to say thank you to the kind strangers on this post. I don’t know much about the MGTOW lifestyle, but I appreciate all the help and feedback I have received.
