I'm a paramedic and I got to see my own code run.

So back when I was in training I had a severe heart attack that killed me for about half an hour. It was nuts. I am now the proud owner of a defibrillator in my chest. But for the purposes of this story that is only context.

I recently had a call come in for a 40s male 7 car wreck. When I got there another paramedic had started working someone who needed to be flown out. At first I was with the police officer that was working the other code. The other ambulance had someone who was fine. You could hear him answer the paramedic asking him questions. Then I checked on the other crew and they asked me to take the guy the police was working on so they could take the patient they were with and he was fine. When I got there it was complete and utter chaos. All the police were trying to figure out who was in what car and what was going on. I found out my patient was in the most wrecked car and the fire department was still trying to get him out.

By the time they got the guy out he was dead. No breathing, no pulse and blue. And the crew I was with had left with their patient. I knew I was alone with this patient and he had been dead for atleast 20 minutes at this point. But I had literally gone through this same exact situation before and I knew if I could just get my patient back he would be fine. So I did everything in my power to get this guy back.

I ran the code for almost and hour and then the helicopter finally got there and when we got him to the hospital he had a pulse. He had been dead for 1hr 15 min and we got him back. The hospital said he had a 100% blockage in one of his main arteries. I don't know what his outcome is, the hospital didn't contact me about anything but the fact that they got him back too.

But it feels like I got a second chance to do my code right, or something.
