One day I was walking home from the subway back to my apartment (I was around 16 at the time) and I passed this homeless guy. He asked me for money and I told him I didn’t have any (I was a kid and didn’t usually carry cash on me) and was about to walk away. I was a bit distracted, but he kept talking and saying I was a “good boy” and that he was a friend of my dads. I was a little amazed at first thinking, “What the hell, my dad passed away 10 years ago, they shouldn’t know me and I don’t know you.” He was clearly homeless and drunk high on something. When I finally looked him in the eye, I noticed it was an old co worker of my dads and he used to sit next to him at work. I guess I looked at him weird, because he kept saying over and over “you don’t remember me, don’t you remember me?” I was amazed and frustrated and loved and sad and a bunch of other emotions all at once. I tried to play it cool, and he was clearly high and I didn’t want to just straight up ask, but I finally asked him “How do you know me and my dad? Why are you out here like this?” And before he could answer he told me his name, and it was my dads name, same first and last name. I was freaking out at this point, and I remember just hugging him and telling him “you need to go back home, my dad is watching over you, go home, this isn’t where you belong.” I went and got him some food and he started crying and hugged me and said “I know you don’t remember me, but you were a great kid, don’t forget that” and walked away. He was dead a month or two later. I never forgot that day, and never have.
