I live in an apartment in a 4 story building that has 12 apartments total. They all have access to a common balcony and we each have a lock on our back door. We also have a front door and a basement area so that's a total of 3 doors that could potentially be unlocked and provide access to our personal apartments.

I live alone and I decided about 2 months after moving in to stop locking my back door because my landlord said he would need it unlocked if he needed to do work or show the apartment if I ever ended up moving out. So it was always unlocked. I work 3rd shift so I was always asleep during the day and I would always lock my front door and keep my key hidden. So all that was ever unlocked was my back door. All of this is just to paint the entire picture.

This happened to me several years ago, but it just occurred to me recently that this could be a good story for this sub.

So back to the story. I was fast asleep in bed and it was around 2pm when I woke up to the sensation of the gun against my face. At first I was confused and thought I was dreaming but when my eyes focused, I saw the stranger. He was about 50 years old and he was wearing a grey stomach covering shirt and grey boxers. I saw the gun and immediately knew what was happening. My fight or flight kicked in and I tried to push him away. I remember yelling at him to get out (not in a brave kind of way, but in a terrified, what the fuck is this, get this thing away from me, kind of way). I remember that he looked extremely shocked as if he didn't expect me to put up a fight at all. He took off and ran and I stayed frozen in place until I heard him leave my apartment and shut the door.

Once it sank in, I just started shaking and shaking violently. I was in shock but I knew I had to get out of there in case he came back. I was so scared to look at my front door and see if he had locked it when he left, because I remember that I had hidden my key. I knew I couldn't access the key from the outside if he had locked it behind him. Somehow, when I looked at my door, I saw that it was wide open and a wave of relief washed over me. I took off running down the stairs with nothing but my phone and ran to a friends house a block away. I remember being so scared to look back because I just knew he was behind me and would shoot me. I texted my landlord and told him what happened. I also called the cops. I had to stay at my friends house until my landlord showed up with a key and let the cops in to look for this guy. It turned out that he had been evicted that morning and had a key to get in the apartment building and he used that to get in my apartment because my back door was unlocked. He was never caught but a couple of days later, I found out that my landlord had been receiving threatening messages from him saying he was going to come back and burn the place down.

I never stayed there again. I moved out a month later when my lease ended and never looked back. But I can only imagine what would have happened if I didn't fight back.
