I was almost kidnapped at a restaurant. I didn’t know the woman who saved me

Once when I was a kid, I was out with my dad and his friend. I was probably 4 or 5. I don't know how it happened, or how long it took, but I suddenly found myself away from the table and in the restaurant parking lot. This man, smiling and talking to me, was opening the door to his car and coaxing me to get in. I don’t know how I got there. I don’t know what he was saying, what kind of questions he was asking me to make me feel safe, or what made me trust him exactly. I don’t remember much of it and I don’t want to remember.

But just before I was about to get into the car, a woman yelled out from across the parking lot. "Are you okay? Are you with your mom?"

I looked at the man who wanted me to get in the car and he looked at me sternly and said to answer "no". I disobeyed him and said yes, and the man next to me said that he WAS my mother. But the woman didn’t believe him. She screamed at the top of her lungs and ran over to me.

The man got back in the car and drove off, and the woman brought me back inside to find my dad. I don’t remember the details of our reunion, but I never forgot the look on my dad’s face when he found me, and I never forgot the woman who saved me. She comforted me for a while and told me I did the right thing. She asked me for my dad’s description, made sure I was okay, and then she was gone. That was it. I never saw that woman again. I never learned her name, I didn’t get a chance to thank her, and I’ve never forgotten her. I hope she’s okay wherever she is, and that she’s still saving lives out there.

That woman saved me. She died to save me. And I didn’t even know her name to let her know I made it.
