Why do fantasy worlds often have the climate of Southern Europe?

I can't help but notice that, especially in high fantasy, the climate is almost always based on Southern Europe, especially the Mediterranean. It's as if the climates of Northern Europe or Eastern Europe or Russia or the Middle East or South Asia or East Asia or even North Africa are almost unheard of. I think that the Mediterranean climate is overused in fantasy, and I wish to see more variety in climate.
