CMV: Modern society is just like Animal Farm

I grew up on a farm in Australia. Life can be a little tough on the land but it is good. You wake up in the morning, the sun is shining, the birds are singing. I have a garden, cattle, horses, sheep... it was a little piece of heaven on earth.

About 8 years ago, a big company came to our valley and said they were going to put in a wind farm. I was skeptical at first, my father had given me a copy of Orwell's "Animal Farm" to read when I was growing up and I felt like the wind farm people were just like the pigs. They told us that they were going to make our valley a better place, improve our lives, and bring a lot more jobs to our little town.

8 years later, our little piece of heaven is like a war zone. They've built over 50 wind turbines, cut down thousands of trees, and all of the wildlife has fled the area. They did employ some of us for a while, but only to cut down trees, most of the workers were immigrants from a large city 300 miles away. And then they left...

The company don't even use the windmills anymore. The storm that passed through Australia this week destroyed 5 of them. I walked through the ruins, and honestly, it was like walking through a scene from a science fiction movie. It's complete and utter devastation.

They lied to us. They didn't want to improve our lives or make our community stronger. We were just pawns in the game of global capitalism. And now that they've exploited us and our land, they just left us to rot.

I've been thinking of moving my family to a different part of the country but I'm not sure what use it would be. It feels like wind farms, solar farms, and all of these other projects are just being put up everywhere. And for what? So we can feel like we're doing our part for the environment? The environment is being completely trashed in the process of production of all these renewable energy sources. I guess it's just my opinion, but it feels like we should tell these big companies to fuck right off and leave us, and our land, alone.

CMV

* Addendum for clarity: The windfarm was built on land that was previously used for cattle grazing. The land was not taken from us. We were just told it was to improve our lives. The part that affected us the most is that they said that they would bring jobs to our town. They didn't, they brought in people from the city to cut down the trees and put in the turbines. After they finished, they left, and the jobs with them. I understand it's not exactly the same as Animal Farm, but the outcome is the same. They exploited us and our land, and then left us.
