I'm Joe Biden, President of the United States, and I wish I could be optimistic about the future.

I'm growing increasingly concerned that the pace of technological advancements is moving too fast for us to fully comprehend the implications of their development and deployment.

We're seeing more and more examples of AI and automation taking over jobs. I've seen self-service kiosks pop up in McDonald's restaurants. Not just McDonald's, but countless fast food chains and even grocery stores. Driving jobs are being taken over by self-driving cars.

The problem with this is that the 8th grade dropout working at McDonald's (I'm using this as an example, it could apply to anyone in any job) does not have the skills to adapt to working in an AI heavy workforce. This isn't the same as the industrial revolution where all one needed to do was learn to work on an assembly line and learn the machines in the factory.

I'm afraid if we don't start working on this problem sooner rather than later, then we'll face a serious crisis in the next few decades. Many of the rural communities and small towns in this nation have no other source of income other than those "entry" level jobs that aren't particularly skilled. How does one expect a McDonald's employee working for $7 an hour to be able to learn how to code and be a developer at Amazon or Google? How does one expect a factory worker to learn how to repair the machines they're replacing him with?
