Twisted branch

I live in the Pacific Northwest. I didn’t take pictures, but I saw something that seemed odd - A branch on a tree that grows downwards, and as soon as it hits the ground, it takes a sharp right angle and begins growing upwards, like a typical branch. It was a branch from a tree that grew to the ground, and then continued growing upwards. Any thoughts on this?
