They have enough energy stores to survive their first year with no food.

My home is a hermitage. No visitors, no parties. I have sealed all the cracks and prohibited food in my bedroom.

This year, 2023, I have had only 4 bugs.

I have 4 adults alive now, and I have fed them, so they will definitely reproduce.

But their population next year will be the offspring of the 4 survived this year, who have enough energy stores to live an entire year without food.

The only food available to them is the 4 I have fed.

So I have prohibited food to the first generation, next year I will have one generation from the 4 prohibited, and the following year, I will have the children of the generation that has been prohibited food.

Neither of these generations would have learned not to reproduce.

This is their survival strategy: accumulating energy stores for one year, and starve the next generation enough to prohibited reproduction, so the following generation has enough food to return to the reproduction strategy.
