How would you name the "left" and "right" sides on a map?

Hey fellow worldbuilders!

One thing I keep running into is the question of how to handle the "left" and "right" sides on a map. In English, for example, when viewing a map, you'd usually call the area on the left as "West", and the right side as "East".

But what if you're using a non-English language, or you're viewing the map from a different perspective? For example, if you're viewing the map from the south, then the "left" side would be "North" and the "right" side would be "South". If you flip the map, then those sides would be reversed.

Furthermore, some fantasy worlds have non-standard cardinal directions, or they use different names altogether. In these cases, using "left" or "right" sides becomes even more confusing.

Other languages might have their own conventions for naming sides on a map. For example, in Spanish, map sides are named based on the cardinal direction of the region depicted, rather than the viewer's perspective. This means that, in Spanish, the "left" side of a map of South America would always be "East", regardless of how the map is rotated.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. How do you handle naming the sides of a map in your worldbuilding projects?

**TL;DR**: How do you name the "left" and "right" sides on a map in your worldbuilding projects?
