Hello Reddit. I've been in the industry for 13 years. I'm the manager of a small gun store in the Southeast. I've never seen it like this. I've worked through two Obama administrations, but this is on another level.

One of our distributors posted their inventories and it was down over 70,000 units just since election day. Remington and Mossberg are the hardest hit as of now. Remington is almost completely out of handguns, Thompson/Center is damn near gone, and there are next to zero Mossberg 590s (or any other model for that matter) to be found. names like Smith and Wesson, Kahr, Colt, and Glock are getting tough to find as well, but those are mostly just the hand guns. The SKUs that are left are mostly specialty items. Weird shit. All of our AR manufacturers are completely void of any inventory, with the exception of some specialty models. The cheap import stuff is almost completely gone as well. The distributors that specialize in those goods are empty.

As for us, we took a bunch of stuff to the Dallas show this weekend. We didn't sell much, but what we did was mostly entry level (Glock 19s, Smith SD9/40 VE) and home defense shotguns (Mossberg 500s). Speaking of the 500, we got a shipment of 30 in on Thursday and they were all gone by Saturday morning. I called a buddy who works at Cabela's and he said they got about 70 in on Thursday morning and they were all gone by lunch time. Another friend at Gander Mountain said they got 40 in on Thursday afternoon and they were all gone by closing time. We're getting requests from people to special order specific guns, and those are sold before they even get off the UPS truck. I've never seen it like this.

The panic is beginning to set it. I had one lady call and ask if we were getting any more Mossberg 20 gauges because she wanted one and the Cabela's in Ft. Worth didn't have any. She wasn't even willing to wait a day or two for us to get one in. She wanted it that minute and was pissy it wasn't in stock. We're getting several calls a day from people asking if we're stocking up on this or that because "the government is going to take our guns." We don't have time for that shit. I had one guy call and ask if we were going to start stocking up on, quote, "the real combat handguns like USP and M&P and shit like that." Why would we do that? We specialize in home defense and hunting. Why the fuck would we start stocking tactical shit just because some idiot on the internet told you to?

I had a guy call and ask if we were going to start carrying any, and I quote, "M4 DoD contractor stuff." What the fuck does that even mean? Why would we do that? What's wrong with our selection? The guy told me he was concerned that his "2nd Amendment Rights" were in jeopardy and he wanted to stock up and wanted the "real deal contractor stuff for the troops." First, our Bushmasters have the same markings as the real issue stuff. It's all made on the same line. Second, he was asking all of these questions but had never owned a gun or rifle a day in his life, didn't know the first thing about leading, mag changes, proper shooting, or anything. This is his first gun and he wants the, quote, " Cadillacs of guns." Mother. Fucker.

We had a guy come in on Saturday and wanted to buy a gun for his wife as a surprise. He didn't know what she wanted, but he wanted to buy one anyway because, quote, "the prices are going to triple and they're all going to be illegal soon and they're harder to find than a unicorn right now." His plan was to just buy one and hope she liked it. He was willing to spend north of $700 on a surprise gun that his wife may or may not even like. Of course we didn't sell him shit. There's plenty of guns out there, and she'll get the one she wants when the time comes.

So there's the view from my standpoint. It's fucking insanity. I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of hope someone does enact some stricter gun laws just to get these Doomsday Preppers out of here.

EDIT: Well, since there seems to be so much interest, I'll update.

We just got done doing our receiving and today's shipments made up for Saturday's lack of sales. (By the way, for those of you that sent death threats because I didn't sell a gun to someone, fuck you. I didn't say the guy was innocent, I said we didn't have a gun he wanted to buy- which was what the original post was about-- and I wasn't about to just sell him a gun he didn't want because he was going to punish the market with it.)

We got about 20 Mossbergs in today. People started lining up outside the door around 8am and we didn't open until 10. We were out of 500s again by 11:15.

We got a small shipment of about 10 or so handguns in. It was mostly pistols nobody has ever heard of and nobody wanted. There were a couple of S&W SD40s and a couple of M&P and one Glock 30. They were all gone by lunch time.

I told a customer that if they were going to continue to call and ask when we were going to have Mossberg 500s in stock again, they needed to get in line because there were about 15 people ahead of them already.

It's insane. I've never seen it like this.

Oh, and for those of you that assumed I was a Trump supporter, you're wrong. I didn't vote for Hillary, either. I did vote. I just didn't vote for either of those two idiots.
