CMV: If we want to stop police brutality, we should first stop sending our cops to war.

I have this theory that a lot of our problems with police brutality can be linked to the fact that most of our police officers are ex-military. The thing is, we have no draft anymore, so the only people we have joining the military are people that actually want to go to war. Then we give them weapons and armor, we teach them how to kill, and we put them in places where they need to be constantly on edge, waiting for an enemy attack. We call them heroes, we praise them for their service. We even give them a bunch of benefits: free school, preference in hiring, and all kinds of other things.

Then, when they get out of the military, we give them jobs as cops. Suddenly we expect them to be able to switch from "war mode" to "protect and serve mode" instantly? That doesn't make any sense. They are literally trained warriors, and we are giving them jobs as peacekeepers. It's ridiculous.

We need to stop hiring ex-military as cops. We need to hire people who actually want to serve the community, people who can do this job without turning to violence at the first sign of trouble. I say that anyone with an honorable discharge from the military should not be allowed to work as a police officer.
