Not because AI took over these jobs but because the stigma and possibility of being replaced by AI will prevent humans from ever taking them again.

Medical, teaching, therapy, and science based jobs are generally high prestige and fulfilling as people get to work to improve the human condition.

Unfortunately, these jobs often rely on standardized testing and heavily structured curriculums. They require a strong short term and long-term memory and ability to recall and recite information in a very specific manner.

AI is very good at these tasks.

Over the next 10 years thousands and thousands of people who have spent years training for these positions will be cast aside. They will be labelled as being less capable than a machine. They will be in a world with millions of people out of work because of AI.

However, there are still areas of these jobs that humans are needed for. These areas often require creativity and emotional intelligence to navigate. An AI may be able to give someone the exact textbook response to a problem, but a human is able to tailor that advice to the specific person.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where AI can already outperform humans in the testing aspects of these jobs. What this means is that humans will be seen as subpar in the testing, and the emotional and creative intelligence areas will be completely thrown out. Why should we let humans do the creative parts of these jobs when they can’t even do the standardized testing parts right?

In this environment, thousands of people who spent their childhoods dreaming of helping humanity through being doctors and teachers will be thrown out without any way to earn a living. They won’t be able to pursue these passions because the training is too long, and the pay is too low.

These fields will stagnate as machines replace thousands of years of potential human experience. Diseases won’t be cured, students won’t be taught, and lives will be ruined as machines take the place of passionate humans.

The next few years will be haunted by the ghosts of jobs that could have been.
