Just came back from 6 days in Japan. I’m not sure if this sub is for people who have never left their country, or just for beginners who have never traveled to other countries and don’t know how to behave

I actually like this sub, it’s helpful when it comes to getting advice on the different locations each country has to offer, but how do people not know basic things like how to act in a foreign country, or what not to do, or what is considered rude. And then they proceed to discuss it.

Ex. Don’t tip in Japan. It’s rude.

Ex2. Don’t finish a meal completely in certain countries. Unless you ask for seconds, the host will keep refilling your plate because they think you’re still hungry.

Ex3. Don’t point at someone with your chopsticks. It’s rude.

Ex4. Don’t leave your chopsticks standing upright in your rice. It’s rude.

Ex5. If you go to someone’s home, don’t show up empty handed.

Ex6. Some countries require you to finish the meal completely, because the host paid good money for the meal and wants the guest to finish it to avoid waste and show that they appreciate the food and the gesture.

Ex7. In some places, like Japan, you can’t just walk and eat/drink. Some places won’t even let you take the food out of the restaurant if you ask for take out. You have to eat it there before you leave.

Ex8. If you’re a guest staying with friends/family for more than a week, give them groceries money. They’re feeding you and keeping you under their roof for free.

These are just a few examples of things you shouldn’t do.

We all start somewhere but I find it very weird when people ask these questions because it just seems like basic human courtesy and common sense.

EDIT: Let me rephrase, because I think there is some confusion. I’m not shaming beginners from traveling. If anything, I’m trying to state the opposite. I HATE the “Don’t do this, don’t do that” posts. I hope that now you all understand what I mean.
