Science should be about achieving breakthroughs, not making a career for yourself

Science has been put on some kind of pedestal as if it's some holy grail of human knowledge, but it's become its own hindrance. Scientists I have met are more concerned with their careers, their research grants, their pretige etc and care very little about contributing to the actual science.

Science should still be as important as it is, however the process of doing actual science should be more streamlined, and not for profit. The process of getting a career in science today is long overdue for a massive overhaul. It's like the science itself doesn't really matter, what matters is how much of a career you can make out of it.

And this is why I think the 'peer review process' is also a massive hindrance to any real breakthroughs. It's hugely flawed because it gives science some kind of stamp of approval, and without that stamp, the science can't be trusted. And who gets to decide that stamp of approval? Other people in science who have a career to uphold.Science should be about those breakthroughs, imagine what we could achieve if we actually streamlined science and didn't make a career out of it.

Also, what the hell is 'applied and basic science'? 'Oh because science is so hard it needs to be broken down into smaller categories, like basic and applied science'. Yeah no shit sherlock, that's literally what every other career has to do on a daily basis, except for science it's somehow different? Weird.
