Netflix merger with Aftonbladet?

As an American and English teacher in Sweden I have found a common recurring complaint. The biggest one is the quality of the students english has gone downhill since “aggregators” were made illegal, and the biggest one is Netflix.

So, today in my classroom, I would like to change that merger “Netflixaggregatör”. Let me explain.

What is the best way to teach English? By speaking English. In Sweden, I find that the best way to teach English is to “trick” the kids into speaking. There are two recurring questions.

1. Will this be on the test?
2. Why is English important?

To the first question I say “if you want to do well on the test you need to practice”.

To the second question I say “look outside, without English we would be vastly uninformed, unable to communicate with anyone outside of Sweden, and if you want to buy anything outside of Sweden it’s a major pain in the ass”.

Let me explain the three points. The first point is the biggest. Without English we would be uninformed. We get everything a little slower here, Resident Evil 4 is a great example, but we get everything. The rest of the world speaks English, so we have a huge advantage.

The second is already in practice. If you speak with someone outside of Sweden, chances are you will be speaking English, not Swedish. Imagine if you didn’t know English, you would feel so ashamed, you wouldn’t be able to go outside of Sweden, because everything outside of Sweden communicates in English.

Now, the third point is the funniest. If you are looking for something online and you only speak Swedish, it would be a nightmare. And the best part is, I have students who refuse to talk in English. It’s like they think they will “break” or something if they speak English.

Now imagine you want to buy something online. You only speak Swedish so you think you can look it up in Swedish. But, you can’t find it anywhere. So you find the website for the product you want and it’s in English. “Oh no” you think. “I don’t speak English, how the hell can I buy this. If only I had taken that English class seriously”.

Now, imagine if you spoke English as well as you speak Swedish. You find what you want online and boom! There you go, you are outside of Sweden and you don’t speak any English? “Oh no” you think “I can’t even buy fucking food! If only I had taken that English class seriously”.

So, back to the title, Netflixaggregator. What if you could get Netflix, with the same quality of English as listening to a native English speaker, but you could control the speed you hear it and read the script?

That’s what I do in my classroom. I play the script from Netflix, turn the speed up and show them the “aggregatör” and have them repeat it, in English. It’s been a magical thing, the students are actually learning English.
