I am notorious for tipping everyone from my mailman to food delivery to the people at the deli counter. I carry a small pouch of $100 bills on me.. When I was younger and in my 20’s, I remember one time I tipped my mailman $100 and I am almost certain he almost cried but I was in a great place in life because I was able to live comfortably and still save money even after paying bills so why not spread the wealth? It wasn’t uncommon for me to give the mailman or the delivery driver $100 each if they delivered something to my house.

I am 40 now and am in a weird place. My money is tight this time of year and I didn’t want to give anyone anything and am almost feeling bitter. I think it’s because my money is tight this time of year, I am feeling a little bitter about the world; lots of reasons because when I was in my 20’s, I was able to spread the wealth and I did. I tipped everyone and I loved doing it. Now, I literally count every $5 bill I get before I spend it because I need to save it if I want to turn it into $10.

This year I was bugged so badly because I didn’t want to give anyone money especially the mailman because I didn’t want to. I want to give him money because I love doing it. I want to put a smile on their face. I want my money to mean something to them. But, right now, I am so tightly wound up that it bothers me to give out money. I feel like I need to say no and I need to keep it for myself.

I did end up giving the mailman money but it was only $20 and he seemed unphased and I was a bit heartbroken because I wanted to give him more. I wanted to be the person who gave him $100. But, I can’t do it right now because I am not that person.

So, do you tip your mailman?
