What in the world is wrong with the timeline of the American economy? It's just jumping all over the place

I've been following the stock market and economy very closely and I'm just shocked about how it has been trending for the past year or so. We get some good news and it jumps up, but then we get some bad news and it jumps up even more. It's just baffling, I thought I had somewhat of a grasp on the stock market, but nope! Lol
