AITA for telling a woman her boyfriend is rude for speaking Italian to her when she is ‘too full’ to finish her meal in an Italian restaurant?

My boyfriend and I are Americans living in Italy. I speak Italian fluently, my boyfriend does not.

Last night we went to a great little restaurant in Florence. We had to wait a while for a table and were very hungry. While we were waiting there was a couple behind us talking loudly about how they ‘haven’t eaten this early in so long’ and how they ‘are usually just starting to eat their first meal of the day at 10:00PM’.

They were clearly American but the woman spoke with an affective tone, drawing out her words in a ‘European way’ that was very annoying.

When a table was ready my boyfriend and I were seated. Two couples later were seated next to us. It was the talkative couple and another couple. I really do not know who they were or how they knew each other but it was very clear the woman was dating the talkative man. The other couple was definitely ‘friends’ with the man and his girlfriend was clearly a very recent date.

The talkative man and his girlfriend started to order a full meal. The girlfriend was not interested in getting antipasto and the man ‘got it’ and ordered for her. When he ordered for her I thought he was just being very sweet. He ordered the same appetizer for himself and then ordered a second appetizer to be brought after we had finished our first courses.

When the food was brought he was shocked to see that his girlfriends appetizer was also brought out. His first reaction was ‘I thought I told you to bring this later’ and the server was like ‘no, this is for your girlfriend’. He argued with the server for a while and I really didn’t care because I hate picky eaters.

Then he starts going on about how his girlfriend had said she wanted to ‘wait to eat this’. And then he goes on about how she hasn’t eaten since lunch and is ‘too full’ to eat right now. Like I said, I don’t really care but it’s very odd to hear a grown man saying his girlfriend is too full to eat a few bites of cheese and prosciutto. But I guess if you haven’t eaten since lunch you would be full in Italy.

Then the server points out that the woman had ordered the appetizer and that is why he brought it out. The man gets pissed that she ordered an appetizer when she had no appetite. The woman doesn’t say anything but looks embarassed. The rest of the meal he keeps going on about how she was too full but ordered extra bread and olive oil and extra meat sauce with her pasta.

I just thought that was all very weird and embarrassing for the woman.

When we were finished our meal and left I heard him say something in Italian to the server. I don’t remember what he said, but it wasn’t very nice. It was along the lines of ‘tell the cook this was not good’ kind of thing.

I stopped and asked the server ‘does he speak Italian?’. The server said ‘of course!’. I said ‘then why is he speaking Italian to the server when his girlfriend doesn’t speak Italian? Is he trying to hide something from her?’ The server just laughed.

The man heard me and got pissed off. He said ‘I can speak Italian just fine. And I am telling her I can speak Italian and there is no reason to ask my server if I speak Italian’. But I thought it was very rude of him to say negative things about her ‘fullness’ at lunch and speak negatively about the food in Italian. So I just said ‘no, you are a rude boyfriend and you do not respect your girlfriend’. Then we left.

Was I an asshole?
