What does “student-centered classroom” even mean in reality?

So, in old-school teaching, the teacher was at the center of everything. He or she ran everything in the classroom, pretty much, and told the students how to do everything, and the focus was on the teacher and old-fashioned academics.

Then the trend was to switch over to the student-centered classroom. But it seems like this has been way overhyped. I think a lot of us really struggle with implementing this. So, what should a student-centered classroom actually look like? In my school, I hear people talking about student-centered learning all the time, like it’s this magic formula that’s going to solve everything, but no one ever really talks about what it’s *supposed* to look like in practice. I’m sure there must be some research out on this.

I know for sure that it’s not just letting the students do anything they want. I know that’s not what anyone means when they use the term. But what *do* they mean? What is the best way to let the students run their own classroom without getting too chaotic?
