Anybody can be an average person today, but I was wondering about famous people in history. I get the sense that Cervantes was probably the closest to an average person in history.

Obviously, he lived in the 16th century, but if you look at his life, it seems incredibly mundane, especially compared to other people in history. He was conscripted into the army, captured by the Ottomans and took 5 years to get released after being ransomed, got injured in battle, suffered from malaria, had a failed first marriage, had a kid with his second wife, and then his wife died. Cervantes then had a bunch of failed jobs and businesses, and spent time in jail before writing Don Quixote.

It seems like he had pretty much the same problems an average person did, and his life seemed much more normal compared to everybody else in his time.
