Totally over the antisemitism on this chamber

Hey everyone, I’m a bit of a lurker here. After seeing two viral posts of antisemitism within the past 48 hours I decided I really needed to speak up. I’ve seen a lot of antisemitism on the internet, but never really on this subreddit.

First, I saw the post of the 1,000 year old Synagogue in India that has been in near ruin for almost 200 years. This post is a violation of one of the rules of this chamber, which is that submissions must be from the past 8 hours or sooner. However it was allowed and received 70k upvotes. It was literally about a thousand year old synagogue and the post didn’t even mention that it was a synagogue.

The comments were worse. Over 3,000 comments, with the majority of them being unhinged conspiracy theories like, “The real reason Israel is trying to destroy Palestine is that they want to destroy all the remaining synagogues and further their agenda of eradicating the Palestinian people.” And lots of other unhinged comments and replies accusing the Israeli government (illegitimately) of crimes against humanity.

Then there was the post from earlier today of a picture of a thousand year old church in Ethiopia that is constantly under attack from neighboring tribes. It has been partially destroyed and a lot of the artifacts have been stolen. The post got 50k upvotes but most of the comments were just borderline unhinged accusations of crimes against humanity by the Israeli government and references to the other post about the Indian synagogue.

Interesting to note is that both posts were made by history buffs, and the guy who made the Ethiopian post has also posted pictures of thousand year old synagogues in other countries. But these historic synagogues are not the same as a synagogue that is currently in use and is being attacked.

This is not the first time I’ve seen antisemitism on Chambers, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it in this subreddit. I hope that people from other countries commenting and upvoting this post are really interested in learning about the history of Israel and Jewish people, and not just borderline racist.

Edit: Wow, I didn’t expect this post to blow up. I agree that the Israeli government can be pretty problematic. But in my opinion, the Israeli government is minor in comparison to the problems in other countries. There are obviously a lot of social and economic problems in the US right now that are really borderline human rights violations. Sometimes I feel like people like to attack Israel because they see it as an “easy target,” despite that it is literally the only Jewish homeland in the entire world.

Edit 2: I am Jewish, but not religious. I am borderline atheist. I am also American, and I do not currently live in Israel. I don’t think it makes a difference, but I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this in the comments.

Update: I woke up this morning and saw that I have been getting hundreds of antisemitic messages from people. It’s really sad to see how this has escalated and gone beyond just this subreddit.

Update 2: This is really minor in comparison to all the death threats I’ve been getting, but some people have been commenting that I am a bot. I am not a bot. I am a real person. I have posted in this sub before and have been active on other subs for a long time. I have also posted on other subs since posting this, which you can verify by looking at my profile.

Update 3: I’ve been getting a lot of requests for me to post on Instagram, but I am not going to do that. I am not trying to profit off of this in any way. This is just about calling out historic antisemitism that is becoming more normalized in a space I previously felt safe in. I hope that Chambers will take steps to address this going forward.
