What did rich kids do before the advent of cell phones?

So rich kids used to have cell phones as an status symbol (read: a fuck you to the poor, look what I have and you don't). I wonder, what did they do before cell phones to show off, like, when were cell phones considered "normal" and not a status symbol. Also, what did rich kids do BEFORE cell phones to show off?
