CMV: The only good thing the police has done in recent times is to catch the Golden State Killer, and even that was the fruit of private enterprise and activities.

If you haven't read about it earlier, the police caught the GSK (a serial killer who killed at least 12 people during the 1970s and 80s) after comparing DNA from the latest crime scene against donations in ancestry.com.

After hearing that, I am having a very hard time trying to find any redeeming quality in the police. They didn't catch the guy. Privately owned ancestry.com did. If the police had their way, we would all be barred from doing such a thing, and the GSK would still be out on the loose.

So, change my view. What has the police done that's good that would make me want to support them again?

**Edit:** Holy moly. I woke up expecting maybe 5 upvotes, but this blew up. Thank you for your arguments. I'll go through it and see if anyone was able to change my view.
