Does white people and black people in the US ever become friends or does it seem to be white people in one group and black people in another?

I’m a white guy from Australia. I’m wondering whether people of different races in the US become genuine friends or do they generally hang out with people of their own race?<br><br>I lived with a black guy from Compton LA for a year last year and he would say stuff about how his perception of white people changed after living with me. <br><br>Just wondering if the US in general has white people in one group and black people in another group?
