AITA for not canceling my birthday trip when my son got into an accident?

I (30F) was preparing for a birthday trip to Miami with my friend. She lives in another state, so I take care of her son (17) after school. He’s a favorite of mine and I didn’t want to miss his sports events, so I scheduled my trip for the week after his final game. <br><br>The day before my trip, he got into a car accident. He was driving someone from his team home when it happened. Both of them were injured critically and were rushed into surgery. I cancelled my plans with my friend to stay with my son and his family as they dealt with the aftermath. I picked up his sister (14) from school and made sure she got to her event on time. <br><br>I was shocked when my friend called to ask what the hell was wrong with me. She said my son was the one who caused the accident and was at fault. It was no big deal if I left as her daughter (18) could babysit him instead. I got angry and we argued over it. I told her it was no big deal to postpone the trip and that I would reschedule with her once things have settled down. She was angry and told me I’m a terrible friend if I didn’t show up.<br><br>My son’s family also found out about our argument. His mom asked if I could stay longer as they really needed the help. She also told me that my friend’s daughter is not very fond of her brother and wouldn’t be happy to babysit him. I said I was happy to stay longer and help out.<br><br>My friend has been angry at me for a while now and hasn’t replied to any of my messages. I feel bad that our friendship has been ruined over this incident but I don’t regret staying. AITA for not cancelling my birthday trip when my son got into an accident?
