To anyone staying in hotels just check for bedbugs, please. (Took me 10 minutes to check and saved myself from the pure worst).

I’m a 26 yr old girl who’s currently living abroad alone. I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels and it never actually occurred to me that bed bugs were even a real problem. I thought it was more of a random myth. For example I’ve stayed in my fair share of shady hotels and never ever encountered a problem.

Anyways. I just moved across the country and staying in this hotel that’s pretty nice and clean by the looks of it. But before I put my suitcase down to settle in I remembered a previous post I saw from this sub of a girl who got literally hundreds of bed bugs in her suitcase just by putting it on the floor overnight and then brought them back to her actual home.

So I take 10 minutes and check the bed and the nearest clothes storage area just to be sure. Lift up the mattress, inspect the sheets, check the corners of the frame just to be sure. And there they were. A whole freaking nest of them! Right near the mattress and the nearest part of the frame where the sheets meet the mattress. I’m talking hundreds if not thousands. I’m not even exaggerating. And the problem with bed bugs is you cannot kill them. They’re impossible to get rid of because they’re so hardy and multiply so fast. It’s been 3 hours of me basically having a nervous break down about it and I’m still just imagining how many would’ve crawled into my luggage. I would’ve lost my mind if I actually ended up taking them back to my new home just by being too lazy to check. And the craziest thing is my hotel is only 30 minutes away from the place I’ll be staying and I still could’ve literally ruined my life by bringing them back with me. Unbelievable.

EDIT: Woke up this morning and asked to be transferred to a new room. I sleep in at the hotel cause I don’t feel like doing much with the stress of it all, finally get up just to go and ask to be transferred. I get back to my room to pack and lo and behold, sitting on the side table that was literally right next to the bed was a plastic bag of dirty laundry. And sitting on top of it was a goddamn bed bug. I swear to god it was like this hotel room had a personal vendetta against me just to prove this myth wrong.
