Before I start, I want to make it clear that I am not attempting to belittle any other social justice movements, but just pointing out how the current movement to Support the People of Iran is misguided.

The recent Support the People of Iran movement on social media has been completely misguided, and is unnecessary. It's also part of a larger trend to equate social justice with social media activism.

I want to begin by saying that I am Iranian, I live in Iran, and have lived my entire life in Iran. I am an Iranian.

I do not think that anyone outside Iran is equipped to talk about Iranian politics, culture, or even economy for that matter. Almost all of the information you get about Iran is through the American media, and we all know how trustworthy that is.

And it's exactly this type of non-information that has fueled this movement. Most of the trends that grew out of this movement are vile and shameful, and do nothing to help the Iranian people. The majority of them wouldn't even make sense to an Iranian. Iran is not the same as Iraq or Saudi Arabia, and it's not a country where people cut off the heads of their wifes in public squares.

One example is the #IRanvsUSA trend, where it was the Iranians who were supporting the Americans. That trend was shameful. It is the result of a shallow and misguided movement.

Another example is when people are changing their Instagram pictures to the Iranian flag. What is the point of this? What is this supposed to achieve? The majority of Iranians do not even use Instagram.

To make things clear, I want to tell you the story of how the Shah was installed in Iran. The Shah was a dictator, and was installed by the British and Americans, who overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran. The Shah, and his followers, were complete puppets of the Americans, and did whatever they were told. After the Shah was overthrown, it was a huge victory for the Iranian people. The current government is not the same as the Shah. The Shah was a puppet for the US, who was allowed to the the country to allow American Corporations to exploit and plunder it.

I want to make clear, that I am not supporting the Iranian government, I am supporting the Iranian people. A movement that is only focused on regime change is not helpful, and is comparable to saying that the solution for the racism suffered by African Americans is regime change. Obviously, the enforcers of these unjust systems are not the problem: it is the system itself.

Now, maybe you are thinking that the Iranian government is the problem. And it may be. However, this is not the problem of international social movements. It is the problem of the Iranian people. We will deal with our government ourselves. The main problem is the US sanctions, which have crippled the Iranian economy, and are directly responsible for the suffering of the Iranian people.

Therefore, I think that the main goal of any international support for Iran movement should be to end the American sanctions, not regime change or whatever else.
