What would the Roman Empire look like today if it never collapsed?

Let's assume that the empire never collapsed. This is not the same as the counterfactual where the empire never declined. We know that the Roman Empire suffered from extensive internal and external pressures in the centuries leading up to its collapse in the 5th Century. But let's assume that rather than collapsing completely the empire suffered a series of civil wars that lasted for a thousand years, slowly transitioning into an imperial system that still exists today with extensive changes, or perhaps the empire even collapsed but was immediately replaced by a federalized equivalent system with the Emperor remaining as figurehead and the individual provinces of the empire established as independent states.
