What should we think of politicians that refuse to answer questions about their political positions?

Ive noticed a lot of politicians avoiding answering questions, and their surrogates and supporters saying that they wont answer questions like that because they dont want to give their opponents fodder for political ads. Its been a theme in the political campaigns I've witnessed in the last several years. It seems to be the standard practice now for politicians to only talk to friendly press and friendly audiences. What should we think about this?

I've noticed that the media hasnt called them on this, and more seem to be going along with allowing them to only take questions from friendly sources, and are granting interviews where they only answer questions from friendly journalists. What does this say about our political system and its current health?
