Everything in my life was perfect, but my mind screamed at me to change everything

I’ve always been your average high-school student, your typical athlete, and your ordinary “it” kid. My dad is a successful businessman, and my mom was the typical trophy wife. I played football as a wide receiver, went to parties with popular people, and never had to worry about financial problems.

But sometimes, just sometimes, I felt like there had to be more. I know this sounds like the opening scene of another cliche coming of age movie, but my dad is your typical self-made man. He made his fortune from nothing, and I never had to lift a finger for it.

But why? I wanted to be my own man. I wanted to make my own fortune. I wanted to be my own person. I wanted to be a legend.

So I did what every child should do. I told my parents. Now my mom took my side, which put a serious strain between her and my dad. My father got angry. Actually, angry wasn’t the word. He was enraged. He never talked to anyone like that before.

It doesn’t matter how it worked out, or what else happened. The thing is, I won. I was to go to some college in middle America, play some sports, and live a simple life, with minimal supervision from my parents, since my mom was on my side of things.

Perfection. That’s what it was.

But why did I feel so…empty?
