Would you rather have all your guns locked away for a year or not be able to buy one for a year?

Many states have recently made laws that guns have to be locked away. This is the first time that I've heard of this and I'm confused on why it would be a big deal? I don't want to be that person who shoots themselves in the middle of the night.
