Heroin dealers.

The history of heroin in the US is well known. But who were the heroin dealers that were mixed into the procuration of the drug. I heard it was the Italian mafia, I read scattered stories of Turkish smugglers, and then I heard it was probably the Chinese. Does anyone know a definitive answer?
