This concept is in addition to the idea of a Universal Basic Income or living wage.

In many countries there exist a minimum wage as the lowest amount that someone can be paid for doing a job. The UK for example has the national minimum wage and the London minimum wage which is the same as the national living wage.

In the UK the living wage and minimum wage is set by the state. I would like to suggest that it should be set by a different body.

My arguments in favour of it is that the state are not just interested in living costs. They have to balance a lot of different item on their agenda including the ability to pay these salaries, which in large part the state do not pay as they employ people on a scale and on the basis of being a job.

A social minimum wage should include aspects like the ability to go on holiday, or to the cinema. To be able to afford a house and car, have a pet, be able to enjoy yourself.

The national minimum wage is paid by the state in large part. For example social care work is largely state funded. The police, defence, teachers, nurses, doctors, civil servants, binmen etc.

It should be based on real living costs and a working wage that also allows you to live and enjoy social and national activities with the rest of society.

I am proposing that a national living wage and social living wage should be calculated by a body that is separate to the state. Maybe a body of academia, or NGOs or a combination of such bodies. The idea is that there should be a living wage for everyone that also includes a social wage element.

It should also be based on real data and research rather than political or ideological approaches to the salary levels.
