My girlfriend talks in her sleep. She's been saying the most horrible things recently...

I used to think there was nothing strange about Tanya’s sleep talking. She would just say random words or short sentences that didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Mainly about food, animals or body parts.

*Can I have some honey please?* ×3

*There’s a cat on my roof.*

*Only your eyes are in focus.*

These were just a few things she’s said in the past. It was a little strange, but not something I’d never heard of before.

However, for the past three weeks she’s started saying things that I can’t quite explain.

We were watching a scary movie when Tanya fell asleep. Her sleep talking was a fairly regular occurrence now, so it didn’t bother me at all. I was pretty used to hearing her mumblings at this point. But tonight was different. Tonight she said something that caught my attention.

*Don’t think about it.*

I frowned. *What’s that, babe? Why are you mentioning the movie all of a sudden?*

*Don’t think about it.*

This time she seemed more serious.

*Babe? Tanya? Are you ok?*

*What I tell you, you must not think about.*

I sat bolt upright, my palms sweating and my face hot. What was she talking about? I tried to shake it off, thinking it was just a side effect of the movie, but something about her words stuck with me.

The next night I was woken up by her saying the same thing. It sent a shiver down my spine. Her tone was so serious, and she was starting to scare me.

*What I tell you, you must not think about.*

Then she mumbled something else.

*Mr. White Kittens.*

*Who’s that?*

*He’s coming.*

*Who’s coming, babe? What’s going on?*

No response.

\-------------

Over the next few days I started to notice other phrases that Tanya would often repeat.

*If you think about it, it will never show itself.*

*When I wake up tell me you love me.*

*Don’t think about it.*

*Don’t think about it.*

*Don’t think about it.*

I started to feel like I was going crazy. Was I *forbidden* from thinking about something? What was it that Tanya wanted me to forget? I couldn’t help but feel Tanya was hiding something from me. I tried hard to focus on work rather than her sleep talking, but it was driving me a little crazy.

She’d never mentioned Mr White Kittens again, thankfully. I don’t think I could handle knowing whatever it was she meant by that name.

I’ve been foolish enough to Google some of the things that she’s said, but there’s no trace of anything remotely close to what she’s talking about.

This all happened over a period of time, and Tanya never once said anything about it when she was awake. She had no idea what she was saying. I was too afraid to broach the subject with her, and so I never brought it up.

Why ruin a happy relationship?

\-------------

Yesterday I had an extremely busy day at work. I wasn’t able to pick up Tanya’s birthday cake or the bottle of wine that I promised to bring. I got in around 9:30 and was exhausted, it had been a very long day.

Tanya was sitting on the couch scrolling through her phone. I flopped onto the chair and sighed.

*Hey, how was work?*

Tanya looked up at me. I could see something was wrong.

*Hey, I’m sorry to say this. I know it’s my birthday and all, but I’ve got a really bad feeling about something. I just think we shouldn’t do anything tonight.*

I shrugged. *It doesn’t matter. I forgot the cake and wine anyway.*

Tanya shifted uncomfortably. *I know this might sound weird, but if you hear something tonight, just ignore it.*

I frowned. *What’s going on? Do I need to call the police or something? Are you in some kind of trouble?*

Tanya looked at me and smiled a little. *No, I don’t know what I’m talking about. I just feel really uneasy. I think it’s just the drink,* she raised her glass, *but yeah. Just be aware ok?*

I got the same uneasy feeling that I got whenever Tanya talked in her sleep. It was like cold water running down my spine.

I shivered and shook my head. *I don’t know what you’re talking about.*

Tanya was taken aback. *What do you mean you don’t know what I’m talking about? I just told you.*

I thought about all of the strange sentences she’d mumbled to me for weeks. *What I tell you, you must not think about.*

I looked into Tanya’s eyes.

*What I tell you, you must not think about.*

*What I tell you, you must not think about.*

*What I tell you, you must not think about.*

She frowned. *What’s that? Did I say that? Am I *still* sleep talking?*

I shook my head. *I know what you’re talking about.*

Tanya stepped forward. *Ethan, how did you know about all this?*

I laughed. *I know everything.*

At that moment I heard something. It sounded like a thumping on the walls.

Tanya’s eyes widened. *See? I told you.*

I thought back to when Tanya first started talking in her sleep.

*Don’t think about it.*

I thought about it.

*Don’t think about it.*

I thought about it.

*Don’t think about it.*

I thought about it.

I thought about it.

I thought about it.

I thought about it.

I thought about it.

I thought about it.
