Hey there.

It's that time of the year again. The time when the average American would ask "what in the fuck is going on in Israel?"

So, imagine a country, surrounded by walls that everything wants to get out of. Where you can't even go for a hike or a bike ride because you're afraid you'll get kidnapped or shot at. Where Hamas is crawling from beneath the ground to get into your house to kidnap you and your children, and you don't even know that it's happening. (It's also kinda complicated because you're crossing the border to get to the other side, because let's face it, the border has been erased.)

That's what it's like to be Israeli.

To you, it's a 15 minute news report, maybe an hour, maybe a full news hour if you watch CNN. To us, it's a full time job. Nobody cares to tell you about how we're doing, about how many people are going to therapy, how many are breaking down into tears in the middle of the street. How many of us have already lost family members to the war. How many of us are going to the front line, how many of us are training in order to stop the next terror attack. How many of us have a family member that was killed by a Hamas rocket. How many of us have family that stopped speaking to us because of the war. How many of us are scared shitless to go outside, even if we have to go to work. How many of us want to flee the country, but can't because we have family here that needs us, or because we have everything here and can't afford to live abroad. How many of us are freaking out because we haven't received any updates from our family members in hours. You don't know, you don't care. You care about the PR, because it looks good on TV. But you don't care about the reality.

So, to the Americans, let me ask you something:

Americans, do you ever wonder what it's like to live in Israel? Your president comes from a background where a friend of his was brutally murdered by a terrorist organization, and he still gave the terrorists billions of dollars. Not to mention that he's a huge anti-semite.

We're not just a news report. We're not just a country that you can care about for two weeks. We're not just something you can put on your Twitter bio. We're people. We have feelings. We have needs. We have feelings. We have brains. We have lives. We have families. We have everything that you have.

We're not just "the country next to Palestine." We're a country that has people from all over the world. We're a country that has a religion that is not Christianity but is not Islam either. We're not a country that "stole someone's land." We fought for this land for 75 years, and we're not going anywhere, so get used to it.

We're people. We're not a news report. We have a heart, and a brain. Don't make us feel like we're only a news report. Don't reduce us to something like that. We're people, too.
