Even if incest was legal and socially accepted, people would still have reservations about it because of the potential risks (that have been greatly exaggerated by society)

It's an uncomfortable fact that incest has inherent risks, no matter how small they are. I read an article that said that the chances of "defects" are 6% for incest, 4% for second cousins, and 3% for everyone else.

That extra 3% can be scary for any couple wanting to have kids.

It's something we can't change. While maybe 1 in 20 people in the general population might have a significant birth defect, it's 1 in 16 for incestuous relationships. While the societal stigma is far worse than it should be, it's not something society made up. It's something we can't change.

Even if incest became legal and widely practiced, there would still be worries about this risk. You can't change biology.
