What do you think is the main reason for the growing wealth gap in America, and what can be done about it?

One side of the argument is that government regulations and handouts are the problem (or at least a major part of it), that it leads to 'unskilled' workers being paid higher minimum wages while the actual skilled workers get little to nothing, and that handouts lead to people refusing to work because the state pays them enough. This side advocates for a complete free market and little (or no) government intervention.

The other side of the argument is that the free market is the problem, because it gives corporate America the ability to take advantage of their workers. This side advocates for things like a $15 minimum wage, stronger government regulations and oversight, a universal basic income, more taxes on the wealthy and large corporations, and more government handouts.

I personally feel that a combination of both arguments is the truth, that we see both sides being a problem in different areas of America. Personally I think a combination of free market and government regulation is the best path, but I want to hear your thoughts.

EDIT: I'd also like to clarify that there are more than two sides, and I'm aware that the two I mentioned don't encompass every viewpoint. I'd appreciate any input from any angle.
