A man approached me at a gas station in the UK and offered to fill my tank for me, then he ran off before I could even ask him why he wanted to do it

A little over 4 years ago, I visited England. This was a trip I had been planning for years and was finally able to do it. I was so excited, that I was bursting with joy at everything.

I landed at Gatwick Airport, and then picked up my car. I was very excited to begin my trip, and it was clear in my attitude and body language, I'm sure. I was about 43 at the time, I'm not a little kid, but I was still very much an excited tourist. I had flown from New York, and was driving across the country to Bristol. The first leg of my trip was to get to a hotel I had booked about 20 minutes away from Gatwick so I could sleep off the plane ride and explore London the next day.

Driving in the UK wasn't the hardest thing I had ever done, but it was a bit strange - especially not being able to get familiar with the car before hitting the road. I had to stop at a gas station along the way to get fuel. I had been driving for less than 30 minutes, and was already running very low. The car rentals in the UK do not give you a full tank of gas, but rather whatever happens to be in the car at the time. If you return it with less than what you started with, they charge you an exorbitant amount for gas. So I didn't have a choice but to stop.

When I got to the gas pump, I started to put fuel in the car. After I started, a man approached me and said "Let me take care of that for you." I was surprised, but he was already taking over the pump, so I said "thank you" and stepped aside. Before I could even speak, he had already finished fueling my car, jumped in his own car, and sped off before I could even ask why he was doing it.

I don't think he wanted money from me. It was so unexpected, and it was so sudden. I didn't have time to ask him anything. He literally just filled up my car and then ran off.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and what it means for humanity. I believe that the world is generally a good place, but people who don't want it to be often get more attention. It's nice to remember that there are truly good people in the world, even if you don't know them.
