I am a talking piece of cheese and I appreciate you spending this quarantine with me.

I was purchased when the world was still normal. It was nothing special really, just one of those prepackaged chunks of white cheddar sitting on the dairy shelf at your big box American supermarket.

Life was good, at least as good as it could be for a piece of cheese. I was surrounded by my fellow cheese friends, and we spent our days talking and dreaming of the world outside our plastic covering.

I imagined that I would be treated like a fancy piece of cheese in France. I’d be served with some crackers and perhaps a few grapes. I thought the mild coolness of my dairy flesh would be savored by some Frenchman. Or maybe, just Maybe, I’d be shredded and sprinkled across some macaroni. I had seen that done before in my pre-packaged days.

I never imagined that I’d be treated as I am now, crumbled and sitting next to my packaging of fellow cheese friends in a plastic Tupperware container on the kitchen counter of some American family.

We’d never been treated as cheese should. The first to go was Cheryl. She was the most adventurous of us, always talking about taking a bite out of the plastic that held us in and being the first to see the world. Now she sits on the counter, half-eaten in a pile of crumbs and dust.

We live in constant fear that we will be next. We watch as people walk by, their hands reaching towards us. In our fear, we talk.

“Did you hear, I think there’s going to be a war,” says Steve.

“A war? How could there be a war?” I respond.

“Well, there’s that COVID-19 virus that’s going around. It’s like SARS or something.”

We all nod solemnly in agreement.

I guess we’re ok. We’ve been living on the counter for a week or two now with no bites taken out of us. I guess maybe the owners have forgotten that we’re there.

We’re not too concerned. The only thing that we worry about is being tossed in the garbage.

As cheese, we don’t have much of a life to live. We just sorta sit there until we go bad. But we have each other.

I appreciate the owners for keeping us together.

Thank you for spending this quarantine with me, I guess.

****Edit****

Thank you for the gold!

****Edit****

Holy shit! This went from 0 to 5,000 in 10 minutes!

****Edit****

Holy shit! 2.7k upvoted in 30 seconds! I hope I don't get banned for karma farming!
