Why do people with their own kids go after single, childless people’s money when they pass away?

This is something I’ve noticed in some news reports and personal experiences. People who have kids selling the estate of a relative who left them their belongings, but keeping the money for themselves, their own kids, their friend’s kids, or their parents, instead of using it for their own kids.
