My family and I have always been baffled by my sister. She’s 30 years old but it feels like we’re dealing with a teenager. She makes one huge mistake and poor decision after another.

Her entire life, she’s looked for “the perfect man.” She insists that every new guy she meets is the one, falls head over heels in love with him, and then gets her heart broken when he turns out to be far from perfect.

I don’t know what percentage of the blame should be placed on her bad taste in men and what percentage on her general naivety. I have no idea how many times she’s been scammed or conned. And she can’t even figure out what a red flag is. A couple of years ago, she dated a man who promised to buy her a house. Turns out that he already had a wife and a big house that was already bought and paid for.

She met her latest boyfriend “Liam” at a bar. From the moment he showed up at her doorstep in his Audi, she had us convinced that he was the perfect man. My parents and I rolled our eyes and prepared for her heart-breaking crash back down to earth.

But it took months for anything to happen. To be fair, Liam was perfect. My sister was beaming with joy and she never mentioned any red flags. He always treated her like a princess and he is a very kind and polite man. He’s good looking, funny, and has an excellent taste in food. He was perfect.

*Too perfect.*

I couldn’t help but be suspicious. There had to be something wrong with him. If there wasn’t, why would he fall in love with my sister?

It was during his and my sister’s third month together that I learned what Liam’s deal really was. I learned it from his friend “Mike.” I met Mike at Liam and my sister’s housewarming party. I was surprised to see that Mike was as horrified by Liam’s antics as I was.

Mike and Liam had met about 15 years ago and had been friends ever since. He told me that Liam had grown up in a wealthy family and that he had always had a strange fetish. Mike told me that Liam believed that the “perfect woman” was one who had been broken down completely. Essentially, he believed that he could only have a truly fulfilling relationship with a woman who had been absolutely broken down.

At first, this just sounded like trouble. Liam wasn’t abusive or anything like that. To the outside observer, it was clear that Liam was a gentleman and that he genuinely cared about my sister. But he was determined to break her down. And he was a billionaire who had been practicing this for his whole life. So it was clear that he was going to get what he wanted.

Mike told me that he’d met about a dozen women who’d Liam had broken down over the years. It had started harmless enough. Liam had met a woman with a serious fear of spiders. He had scared the shit out of her by putting a realistic dummy spider on her car. She had almost had a heart attack. But Liam had rescued her and she had been grateful for him. And she’d fallen in love with him.

It had gone on from there. But as the years went on, Liam had gotten more and more twisted. He used to hire actors to pretend to rob them or mug them. He’d even hired a man to kidnap one of his girlfriends for a weekend.

Mike hadn’t learned about that last one until it was over. He’d been horrified. He’d told Liam that he couldn’t do that. She was a real human being. It looked like he’d kidnapped her. But Liam insisted that it had been worth it. He said that there was nothing quite like the experience of comforting a broken-down woman.

Mike told me that Liam had been waiting for his “perfect woman” for years.

He’d met so many broken-down women but he was looking for the perfect one. The one who was strong, smart, and beautiful. But was still weak enough to be broken down.

He’d been looking for the “perfect woman” for years. He’d finally found her in my sister.

I was horrified. So was Mike. He’d been Liam’s friend for over a decade and he had never been okay with this.

I begged him to talk Liam out of whatever he was planning. But Mike told me that Liam wouldn’t listen to him. Liam had never listened to him. But he knew that he was doing something big this time. He had a secret room in his house. Mike had seen it. He said that it was filled with heavy objects and big locks.

When I got home, I wrote down everything Mike told me and sent it to my parents. My dad called me as soon as he read the note.

When I picked up the phone, he asked me if I really believed what I’d written in the note.

I told him I did.

*More than that, I believed what Mike had told me.*

My dad sighed. He told me that Liam was a great guy and that I shouldn’t get in the way of my sister’s relationship. I reminded him that my sister had a bad track record with guys. He said that he knew that. But he believed that Liam was the one. Liam had gone out of his way to establish a relationship with my parents. He’d been very kind and generous to them. My dad asked me if I’d ever even met Liam. I told him that I’d met him that night.

That wasn’t good enough for my dad. As long as my sister was happy, he was happy. That was it.

She was extremely happy. Over the moon.

She had no idea what was coming.

Over the next few weeks, I noticed that my sister was going through a lot of big changes. She’d started whining about her job. She’d never liked her job but now she was talking about quitting. Liam was convincing her to do it. He was “offering her freedom” from her job. I’m sure you can guess what he’s planning.

She’s also become a lot more anxious.

When I confronted her about this, she blamed it on her upcoming move. She’d decided to leave her one-bedroom apartment and move in with Liam.

I begged her not to do it. I couldn’t tell her the truth. I figured that she’d just deny it. But I told her that she was moving too fast.

She rolled her eyes and took Liam’s side.

Now she’s moved in with Liam. She’s quit her job. And Liam has started whining about how busy he is. He says that his job is taking up all of his time. He’s been hiring a lot of people to do odd jobs around his house. I’m sure it’s all for my sister.

Liam’s perfect plan is unfolding perfectly.

And nobody believes me.

My sister’s life is about to go to shit. And nobody believes me.
