Let me start this by saying that I am not, by nature, a religious person. I am an agnostic, and I was content with just letting the world go on without me worrying about the consequences later on. Life on Earth was enough for me, the spiritual stuff was just fairy tales, legends, and fables.

But that all changed when I met him.

It all started on a crisp Friday night. I was out on the town with some friends, drinking like there was no tomorrow and having the time of my life.

And then I saw him.

He was tall, standing head and shoulders above the crowd. His eyes seemed to gleam in the light, an unnerving shade of green that I had never seen on a person before. But his smile...oh, his smile. It was so captivating, so wise, so full of a deep knowledge that I could never even begin to grasp. It was the kind of smile that drew you in, that made you want to learn more. I was entranced by him, and I couldn't help but be drawn towards him like a magnet.

“Hello,” he said as I approached. His voice was deep, like a bass line that resonated through me, and it seemed to vibrate through every cell in my body. I wanted to jump into bed with him right there and then. “I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled at me.

I giggled like a little girl. “Waiting for me?” I said, trying to keep my cool. “How did you even know I was coming?”

“Oh, I know everything,” he replied, his eyes glinting in the light. “I know your deepest secrets, your darkest desires. I know your name.”

“Really?” I said, trying to play it cool, but he could tell by the look in my eyes that I was intrigued. “What is it, then?”

He leaned in close, his breath caressing my ear. “I am the one they call the devil,” he said, his voice low and husky. “And you, my dear, are the one I am searching for.”

I laughed. “The devil?” I said, trying to keep a straight face. “I think you’ll have to do better than that.”

He chuckled, a deep rumble that seemed to come from the depths of his belly. “Very well,” he said. “Let me show you.”

And then he did.

He took me to unimaginable places, places I could only dream of. Beautiful beaches, rolling hills, even the depths of the ocean. And through it all, he was there, guiding me, protecting me.

But the most surprising thing was that he never once tried to sleep with me. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I could tell he wanted to. But there was something holding him back, something that made him stay his hand.

I didn’t even care, I was so smitten with him. I loved him, with all my heart and soul. And I knew he felt the same way about me.

It wasn’t until later, after we had known each other for some time, that I started to notice anything out of the ordinary. It started with little things. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, as if he had a sixth sense that I didn’t. And he never seemed to sleep, which I thought was odd, but I never asked him about it.

It was later, after we had been dating for a few months, that I saw the first real sign. It was a Saturday, and we were at a restaurant in town. A man came in, clearly drunk, and started yelling at people. I was terrified, but my date just smiled, and the man suddenly stopped, as if he had been switched off. He turned and walked out, leaving us staring after him in shock.

“What the hell just happened?” I asked, turning to my date.

“Just a little trick I know,” he said, his eyes glinting with amusement.

I frowned. There was something about him, something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. But I pushed it aside, and we continued eating.

It wasn’t until after dinner, when we were walking home, that I saw anything else. We passed a group of people on the way, and one of them stepped forward. “Lucifer,” he said, his voice dripping with hatred. “I should have known you were around here somewhere.”

My date smiled, a cold, calculating smile. “Azazel,” he said. “I didn’t know they let you out of your cage.”

“And I didn’t know they let you out of hell,” the man spat at him, before turning and running.

I stared after him, shocked. “What just happened?” I asked.

My date sighed. “Nothing,” he said. “Just an old friend.”

And that was it. We didn’t talk about it again.

It wasn’t until recently that I started to suspect the truth. The man at the restaurant had called him Lucifer. And the last couple of days, there had been so many odd things happening. Equipment would malfunction around him, and the weather seemed to change whenever he was around. And the final straw came yesterday, when I saw him lift a car with one hand. I mean, who does that? But when I asked him about it, he just laughed, and told me I was worrying about nothing.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more. That he was hiding something from me. So last night, I decided to confront him.

“Who are you?” I asked as soon as he came in the door.

“What do you mean?” he replied, a look of confusion crossing his face.

“I mean, who are you?” I said. “Really. Because the last few days, I’ve been noticing some very strange things. And I want to know what they mean.”

He sighed and sat down. “I told you,” he said. “I am the one they call the devil.”

“But that’s just a myth,” I said. “It can’t be true.”

“Just because you don’t believe in it doesn’t make it untrue,” he said. “And I...I have feelings for you.”

“But how is that possible?” I said. “I’m human, and you’re...you’re the devil. It can’t work.”

“Why not?” he asked. “I know that in the legends, I am portrayed as some kind of evil being, as someone who is the enemy of mankind. But the truth is, I am just trying to make my way in the world, the same as you. And if that means falling in love with a human, then so be it.”

I stared at him. Could it be true? I thought back to all the strange occurrences of the past few days. Equipment malfunctioning, the odd names he had been called. It all added up. I thought about his smile, the first time I saw him, and how it seemed to draw me in. It was all too much to be coincidental.

“Okay,” I said finally. “I believe you.”

He smiled, his eyes lighting up with happiness. “Good,” he said. “Because I couldn’t bear to lose you.”

And with that, he leaned forward and kissed me.
