If I have a history of earwax, should I avoid earbuds?

My earwax makes earbuds feel like they are trying to break through to the other side of my ear canal. It’s very unpleasant. I made an appointment with a doc to have it looked at but I’m guessing the doc will tell me to stay away from earbuds.
