Why did the Union want control of Fort Sumter so badly? What was so important about it?

This is something I’ve never understood. I get that it was the property of the United States Government so the US should have been able to control it. But I also understand that it was in South Carolina and there was a new Civil War going on. But I don’t understand what the Union needed it for?
