I've been making this simple change at the beginning of my showers for over a year now, and have noticed that I can have LONGER showers using significantly less water.

The reason is that starting with cold water helps your water pressure, when you change to hot water the pressure doesn't change, so you're not using as much water to provide the same amount of bathwater in a longer time period. Additionally, many showers use electricity (electric heaters), so turning the heater on before the water reaches you also saves electricity by giving the heater a 15 second break.

I've noticed that I've saved 20-25% water and 15-20% electricity. Your actual percentage will vary significantly depending on what you have installed in your home.
