Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro today, adding a new Always On feature called "Comfort Tone" that adjusts the display's color temperature whenever Always On is enabled. The True Tone feature will be deactivated when the display is in Always On mode, and users will have the option of turning on "Comfort Tone" to automatically adjust the screen's color temperature to a more orange tone.

When Always On is disabled, the screen goes black and the True Tone feature will be able to adjust the screen's color temperature based on the environment that the iPhone is in. Apple said the feature is designed to help improve iPhone users' sleep quality by reducing the amount of blue light emitted during the night or in dark rooms.

According to Apple, a study from Harvard found that exposure to bright screens for an hour before bed can delay a person's sleep by approximately 30 minutes, and that screens with warmer color temperatures are better for eyes and don't interrupt the sleep cycle as much as brighter screens.

A reference to the new feature was discovered in the iOS 17 code back in August. It's possible that Comfort Tone can also be enabled manually.
