I’ll get to the point. I 23f teach 11th Grade US History (AP and Honors) at a school with a large BIPOC population. I feel like my students need to understand the past in order to understand the present. We just watched a video on the Harlem Hellfighters and their training in the south, where one of their sergeants was lynched (one of the only recorded lynchings of a Black soldier).

The students were justified in their outrage. I did my best to explain how Jim Crow worked and how systemic racism was created after the civil war. They were rightly upset. I tried to show them how the world has changed. I tried to show them how much work is left to be done. I tried to show them the value of justified violence.

I was talking to a fellow teacher and she was horrified. She said that she understands what I mean, but she’s worried about blowback from other teachers, admins, and parents. She said it wasn’t the right time to teach that.
