Why do people who want to ban firearms ignore the statistics?

I show statistics that show areas with higher levels of firearm ownership have less crime, as well as countries with strict gun control laws have higher crime rates. Then I get scoffed at. Just curious as to why this is. I can't imagine that people who want stricter gun laws would rather not be safe at home, but I guess I could be wrong.
